Lyndon Ave. Greenway breaks ground in Brightmoor

The Lyndon Avenue Greenway broke ground on Saturday, April 11 and is expected to be complete in May. The project will connect two major parks in Brightmoor: Eliza Howell and Stoepel.

The project calls for 1.5 miles of Lyndon to be repaved with bike lanes painted. At both anchor parks, there will be trailheads — complete with information about the park and the greenway, benches and trash receptacles — that will serve as gateways to the trail. Furthermore, there will be three pocket parks built along the length of the trail. One will be gardened, another will have a walking trail and the third will have a community garden with six plots.

The budget for this phase is just over $619,000, much of which was contributed by the Greenways Initiative of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan.

The next phase of the project calls for more lighting and additional amenities at the pocket parks. “We also hope to acquire more land along the living greenway to keep it nice, to keep it green,” says Eliza Marroni, fund development director and project manager for Northwest Detroit Neighborhood Development, the project’s steward.

The greenway was designed by Ann Arbor-based JJR.
