Some like it hot: Virtuoso James Carter showcases brassy talents at Cliff Bell’s

Hello swingers. Welcome to the holiday season in Detroit. For the fourth straight year Mack Avenue recording artists Hot Club of Detroit is joined by Detroit-born/New York City-transplanted saxman James Carter for a positively swinging night at Cliff Bell’s.

Carter was born in Detroit and attended upper Michigan’s Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp and was a member of the group Bird-Trane-Sco-Now. He has been prominent as a performer and recording artist on the jazz scene since the mid-1990s, playing saxophones, flute, and bass clarinet. On his 2000 album Chasin’ the Gypsy, he perfromed with his cousin, jazz violinist Regina Carter. He has played on albums with Cyrus Chestnut, Wynton Marsalis and the Mingus Big Band.
