A new exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum chronicles Metro Detroit's matrimonial past, with clothes, stories and artifacts from 1640 to the present. "Saying I Do: Metro Detroit Weddings Traditions" highlights bridal rituals from our region's rich fabric of diversity, writes Freep reporter Cassandra Spratling.
Excerpt:
Visitors to the exhibit will see that some customs are common across
religious and ethnic lines. For example, Germans used to break ceramic
plates, similar to the way Jews break glasses. Henna applications on
the bride are common among some Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Hindu
people. Nigerian and Polish people pin money on brides while they dance.
