The building housed a hair salon that shut its doors seven years ago. It's been empty since.
But volunteers who gathered at the shop on the 10600 block of West McNichols near Meyers see potential beauty in the salon. About a dozen people were clearing out furniture, decor and other items left behind, removing a tattered awning and working to clean up the building inside and out.
The goal is to turn the building into a community hub for social justice and an incubator for small business in the west-side neighborhood near Marygrove College.
"The space is going to go from being an eyesore to becoming a community asset," said Melissa Samuels, a Marygrove graduate from Detroit who is creative director of the Six Mile Community Collective, a grassroots community improvement group.
