The University of Detroit Mercy plans to transform a 261,000
square-foot vacant hospital into an expanded clinic and additional
classroom space for its dental school. The site, the former Kindred
Hospital, is located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. just east of
I-96.
Excerpts from article:
The school's moves, hailed
by Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and Gov. Jennifer Granholm as crucial
investments in the city, will include spending up to $30 million on
relocating the dental school.
The school has received more than
1,550 applications for the 78 spots in next year's class, said Robert
Steiman, dean of UDM's School of Dentistry. The bigger facility will be
able to take on about 90 first-year students.
