Long-stalled Metro Detroit transit plans are 'building steam'

Efforts to build transit in the region are moving forward, with Democrats in control of the state House, governor's office and Congress.

Advocates say city after city has benefited from building a transit system, creating jobs and economic development along the routes. With the possible exception of Los Angeles, Detroit is the only major U.S. city without effective mass transit, critics say.

State Rep. Marie Donigan, D-Royal Oak, was tapped recently to lead a new House subcommittee focusing on public transit. While the subcommittee is responsible for the entire state, Donigan said it will be difficult not to focus on Metro Detroit, whose leaders have quarreled for decades over transit plans.
