City Council voted last week to move ahead with the demolition of Tiger Stadium but not to transfer its ownership to the Detroit Economic Development Corporation.

The mayor’s plan would preserve the historic playing field. It also
would allow a nonprofit group, the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy, to
save one corner of the ballpark as a museum and events center, provided
the conservancy can raise the money to do so.

On Wednesday, Matt Casadonte, a Corktown homeowner, said he disagrees
with another preservationist idea of using the stadium for minor league
baseball. “Nobody really wants a baseball stadium by their home,”
Casadonte said.

“Part of it should be preserved, and most of it should be torn down,”
he added. “It should be developed into mixed-use residential and
commercial space, but not chain stores … no Wal-Marts.”
