Even with instability in the automobile industry and a staggering
slump in residential real estate in metropolitan Detroit, the Tigers
have sold enough tickets to set an attendance record this season. The
previous mark, 2,704,794, came in their most recent championship
season, 1984.
"Sometimes, in a tough economy, baseball
flourishes," said Dave Dombrowski, the team’s president and general
manager. "People might not make real long trips, but they’ll say, 'Let’s go to the ballpark.'"
