Villages host architecture students and faculty for sustainability study

Planning sessions will include nontraditional uses for land, including urban farming projects and non-motorized transit options.

Starting today, 33 students and 12 faculty members from area colleges will tour the neighborhoods of Indian Village, West Village, East Village, Islandview, the Gold Coast and Berry subdivision with an eye toward economic, social and environmental sustainability. They'll spend the weekend coming up with nontraditional uses for vacant land in the district such as urban agriculture and bicycle lanes.

Architecture and urban planning students and faculty members from Lawrence Technological University, University of Detroit Mercy and the University of Michigan will participate in the planning session -- or charrette -- hosted by the Villages Community Development Corp.
