Spirit of Detroit gets birthday makeover

The Spirit of Detroit will receive repairs this year that are estimated to cost $100,000.

The statue, installed in 1958, is considered one of the best works by the late Marshall Fredericks, a sculptor of international renown who also crafted the wounded gazelle statue at Barbour Memorial Fountain on Belle Isle.

The elements have worn away some of the statue's green patina, and about a decade ago the thigh was damaged by a vandal with an axe.
