Detroit might have two bridges to Windsor soon. Environmental approval
was granted to the second one, which is now moving toward the planning
and land purchase stage.

The new bridge plan is called the Detroit River International Crossing,
and is fiercely opposed by Grosse Pointe transportation magnate Manuel
“Matty” Moroun, whose Detroit International Bridge Co. owns the 80-year
old Ambassador Bridge and is well along in his plans to add a second
span with his own funds.
Supporters of the new bridge say it’s needed so that the border
crossing is under government control and to handle projected increases
in border traffic. Moroun says the new bridge is unfair competition and
unneeded because border traffic has been down since Sept. 11, 2001, and
because of the U.S. economic downtown.
