Detroit ‘puts on Sunday best’ for super throngs

Excerpts from the article:

"Super Bowl XL is not only an affirmation of what Detroit is, but what it is becoming," auto racing giant and Super Bowl host committee chairman Roger Penske said, hoping to spotlight the positive changes the city has seen as it ramps up for the single biggest sporting event of the year.

The Motor City warmed up the engine on this project more than five years ago, and it has been feverishly trying to put on its Sunday best before the super throng arrives in another week.

"Detroit has had a certain reputation, and what the Super Bowl has done is give us the chance to show everyone all of the good things that have taken place here," said Susan Sherer, executive director of the host committee.

"The city has been unfairly labeled over the years, and people who haven't been here in a while will see that. One of our biggest goals with the Super Bowl is to show the world what Detroit looks like today, and build a lasting legacy."

"This is Detroit's big moment in the spotlight," said Ronald Walker, a private contractor who painted over graffiti on the side of a warehouse two blocks from the game site while a masonry saw whined and screeched in the background as sidewalks were being repaired. "It seems like everybody's jumping in and helping out, fixing things up. We want people to know this is a good city."
