Reid to step into role as chair of community engagement

When Irvin Reid steps down as president of Wayne State University this spring, he will step into position as the chair of community engagement that was recently endowed by Eugene Applebaum.

Applebaum's gift provides seed money to grow the program through other fund-raising, Reid said.

Ultimately, he said, his decision was based on a love for Wayne State and Detroit and a desire to forge stronger relationships between the two entities.

"It's not enough to be located in an urban area," he said of the university. "You have to want to be engaged in that community and its residents."
