Anyone who has ever had to make a last-minute trip to Chicago to obtain
a passport ASAP will be thrilled to learn that a "Gateway" passport
office will open in Detroit this fall.

The announcement, made Friday at an international border summit in
Detroit, came one day after state legislators approved creating an
enhanced driver's license that would act as a passport substitute at
land borders with Canada and Mexico.
The new passport agency is
to open by October and employ 40 to 60 people. It will be located
downtown, but a specific location is not yet set, said Jan Fernald, a
State Department operations officer for passport facilities.
Detroit was chosen because of its proximity to Canada's border, its size and demand.
