One D passed out grades for the city during the Mackinac Detroit Regional Chamber's Mackinac Policy
Conference. Unfortunately, if Detroit's mother saw these grades, the city would be grounded for the summer.
The group discussed where progress is being made and what needs to be done to improve the scores.
Excerpt:
The priorities to receive the lowest grades, categorized as missing
their targets, are race relations and educational preparedness. In race
relations, progress includes work underway to gather data that can be
used towards the goals of improving individuals’ socio-economic and
educational status, and funding obtained to measure the perceptions of
race relations, discrimination and equal opportunity in the region.
In
terms of educational preparedness, progress includes programs that have
been or are being launched to increase the number of children and
adults reading at grade level, and increasing numbers of schools are
participating in efforts to increase the graduation rate of high school
students and reduce dropout rates.
Receiving medium grades,
categorized as further action required, are the priorities of economic
prosperity, quality of life and regional transit.
