An editorial in the Oakland Press reads:
Speaking of Detroit, we need to remind ourselves of the lesson given
our state's leaders during their latest annual gathering on Mackinac
Island. ...
Detroit is Michigan in the mind of the world at large. The state has
precious little unique identity without it. ... It is expecting a lot
to assume anyone outside the state thinks of much else but Detroit when
Michigan is mentioned. ...
Just as the region and the rest of Michigan suffer in the mind's eye of
the nation because of the negative impression of Detroit, everyone
involved will benefit when - and not until - good-news stories start
originating with "Detroit" datelines.
And it's only a matter of time until the national media discover the
surge of investment in Detroit that inevitably will follow the city's
tax cuts.
