NCAA regional semifinals give Detroit hotels a boost

In what could be a sign of things to come next year, downtown hotels received a bump in occupancy rates during the three recent NCAA Tournament games held at Ford Field. Ford Field will host the NCAA Tournament Final Four next year.

The NCAA regional semifinals brought a boost to the downtown Detroit hotel market March 28 and 29, according to statistics released to Crain's by the Hendersonville, Tenn.-based hospitality research firm Smith Travel Research.

Detroit's hotel occupancy was 85 percent on March 28, when there were two Sweet 16 games at Ford Field. And in preparation for March 30's Elite 8 game, Saturday's occupancy was 75 percent.

The city's average occupancy is 55 percent.
