Classical music training organization receives $1 million grant

Detroit-based Sphinx Organization, a non-profit group that promotes the talents of young black and Latino classical string players, was awarded a grant for $1 million from JPMorgan Chase.

The grant — the largest corporate gift Sphinx history — promises to expand artistic and educational programs and shine the spotlight of Carnegie Hall on Sphinx laureates and the all-minority Sphinx Orchestra.

Sphinx has won national acclaim for redressing the inequity of minorities in classical music. It has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and provided opportunities with top orchestras.
