The Detroit Zoo isn't in Detroit but it is a part of Detroit. In fact, it's a part of not only the city and Wayne County, but Oakland and Macomb as well. The tax levy, which would essentially boil down to about a dollar a month, would help the Detroit Zoo maintain itself and continue to provide 125,000 children a year with a place to go for a school field trip.

unlike other educational and cultural institutions, its major assets --
3,000 animals on a 125-acre site -- require daily attention. Animals
can't be put into storage when there are no funds to show them off to
the public. You either have a zoo or you don't.
The Detroit area
has a very good one, and residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb
Counties ought to keep it that way by voting yes in the Aug. 5 election
on a small, new tax that will deliver a much needed stable source of
revenue for the zoo.
