“The Last Mimzy” premiered at the Detroit Film Theatre on March 17, culminating a decades-long process for director Bob Shaye, a Detroit native.

Excerpt:

Shaye returned to his hometown of Detroit on Saturday to
screen “Mimzy” for a sold-out audience at the
Detroit Institute of Arts. It was in Detroit that Shaye
originally discovered the material on which “Mimzy” is based: the 1943 short story “Mimsy Were The Borogoves” by Lewis Padgett (a
pen name created by married authors Henry Kuttner and
Catherine L. Moore). It’s a tale about two children who
discover a box of toys that give them astounding mental and
physical powers.

“It was included in a distinguished collection of the best
of American science-fiction I read when I was 14 in
Detroit,” the 68-year-old Shaye said. “The story
stuck with me all that time.”
