Even down in sunny Florida, downtown Detroit's growth and the Tigers' success are being noticed and talked about.

Dana Johnson, chief economist with Comerica Bank, said while the increased spending downtown may mean people are spending less money elsewhere in the area, it's helping establish Detroit as an entertainment destination.

"I think people get in a habit of using the city, and the more comfortable they get the more likely they are to continue using the city," he said. "So I think there is likely to be an afterglow affect."
