Now that the courts have ruled, Karmanos will expand at its DMC home

Now that the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute will remain at the Detroit Medical Center, work will begin on the first phase of a scaled down $47-million expansion plan.

Dr. John Ruckdeschel, chief executive officer of Karmanos, has called the reduced project an "OR on stilts," beginning with six operating rooms in an otherwise vacant building. The rest of the building would be completed in phases as money allows.
