Greenway project to add to East Side recreation options

Excerpts from the article:

Standing across from Detroit City Airport, Karen Brown, executive director of the Creekside Community Development Corp., looks proudly at the construction crews working on the Conner Creek Greenway.

"This is really going to be something for the entire community," said Brown, as crews installed lighting and did prep work for landscaping.

"Recreation is one of the things that is lacking around here, and this fills that void."

The greenway is the latest project developed by members of the Detroit Eastside Community Collaborative, a group of more than a dozen nonprofits working to improve the east side.

The individual members, which include the Warren/Conner Development Corp. and the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit, all were interested in the type of green space project the gateway would create.

When completed, the Conner Creek Greenway will stretch south from Eight Mile to the Detroit River and trace the original Conner Creek.

The project will involve the construction of pedestrian and bike paths and will include plants, flowers and historical markers.

The path, when completed, will connect the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Chandler Park, Mack Park and the Maheras Gentry Park.
