Cass Community Social Services is cutting energy costs with its new green gym. The bicycles used in the gym will generate electricity.
Excerpt:
The Green Gym will include stationary bicycles that will generate
electricity to be redirected into Cass Community Social Services' power
grid. Over a year's time, with four daily classes and 10 people in each
class, those bikes -- Green Revolution Technology-enabled -- and their
riders will generate enough power to light 36 homes for a month or
three homes for a year, the nonprofit said in a release.
Other
equipment at the gym, which is located inside Cass' warehouse on
Woodrow Wilson in Detroit, includes two weight machines, boxing bags
and a treadmill.
"Not only is this gym a good idea for the
environment, but it will help build the general health of our clients
who often struggle with diabetes or heart disease associated with
obesity and weight gain," said Rev. Faith Fowler, who is executive
director of Cass.
