Huge suburban home builder looking to urban markets like Detroit

After building primarily suburban subdivisions for years, one of the nation's largest private home builders, Kimball Hill Homes, is heading downtown; including home construction in cities like Detroit.

The company recently formed a new division to concentrate on central-city development and also announced plans for four projects — three in Chicago and one in Detroit — designed in part to shine a spotlight on the problem of affordable housing.

Fox Creek, the Detroit project, is an attempt to revive a neighborhood on the city’s Far East Side with up to 4,000 new homes, 50 percent of them in the affordable category.
