Wayne County Executive Rober Ficano is forging ahead with his plans for
a Cobo expansion and a transfer in ownership to an authority comprised
of representatives from Detroit, Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties
and, probably, the state. He hopes legislation supporting his plan will be introduced this month.
Excerpt:
The plan does not call for a tax increase, but it would extend the
hotel and liquor taxes collected by all Michigan counties, which is set
to expire in 2015, for another 22 years.
Under Ficano's plan, the authority would pay lump cash disbursements
totaling $233 million to Michigan counties as an inducement to allow
the tax to continue.
