Group pushes plan to expand Cobo, add space for R&D

A new group of civic and business leaders is seeking funding for a larger, multi-use Cobo Center that would combine convention space with university and private research labs and charter schools.

According to the story:

The Coalition for Michigan’s Future has already engaged support from two key Republicans. U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-Bloomfield Hills, and Craig DeRoche, R-Novi, speaker of the Michigan House.

Supporters said the expanded Cobo would include the 1 million square feet the Detroit Auto Dealers Association wants for the North American International Auto Show and upper floors that could be used by charter schools and research labs focusing on alternative energy.

They said the labs would work in conjunction with the NextEnergy Center near Wayne State.
