Though Cobo has seemed to be a dividing force for some between urban and suburban issues, it is at the same time a testament to the economic integration of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

The political spectacle over ratification of a regional authority for Cobo is viewed by some as a litmus test for whether the region can come together to take on the litany of challenges we face. If it's this hard to complete a deal to expand and modernize Cobo, what are the chances that we can come together to create a regional mass transit system or strengthen public education or make the other investments and tough decisions required to build a new prosperity in Michigan?

Ironically, while Cobo is seen as a symbol of what divides metro Detroit, its most important event, the North American International Auto Show, is an annual testament to how economically integrated the counties of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb are.
