Cristo Rey, a co-ed Catholic school set to open in Southwest Detroit in 2008, has secured work-study commitments from more than two dozen local employers. The school will be located at the former Holy Redeemer High School.
Excerpt:
The new high school will operate as part of the Chicago-based Cristo Rey Network
of high schools which focuses on preparing economically disadvantaged
youths for college and uses a work-study program to help offset tuition
costs for the students while giving them exposure to the workplace.
"All
of these schools are located in urban environments," said Joyce Greco, development director for the school's planning committee. "They
are in areas where either the public school isn't doing the job or
where private, Catholic education is not affordable for everyone."
Ninety-eight percent of the students in Cristo Rey schools go to
college, project director Sister Canice Johnson said. “We're helping to prepare a strong workforce,
and this appeals to employers.”
