Census says Detroit population was undercounted by almost 48,000

Efforts of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and the City of Detroit Office of the Mayor have paid off: the United States Census Bureau has increased its 2006 population estimate for the city to 918,849, up from its previous estimate of 871,121. This means more federal funds for roads and community block grant programs.

Detroit will continue to challenge census estimates, said George Jackson Jr., DEGC president.

"We believe the number should be at least the 933,043 estimated by Social Compact," [DEGC director of strategy and external affairs Olga] Savic said.
