AP looks at economic impact of permanent casinos in Detroit

An AP article looks as the economic impact of the three Detroit casinos on Detroit's economy in terms of job creation, contribution to the city's tax base and crime reduction downtown.

Since opening, the Detroit casinos have pumped just over $1 billion into the city coffers and created about 7,000 jobs at a time when many Michigan companies are closing or cutting back.

From 2001 to 2005, actual crime incidents in downtown Detroit dropped from more than 3,000 to 2,025, with more than half committed being larcenies, a Wayne State University study shows.The downtown crime rate two years ago was 2,559 incidents for every 100,000 people. In 2001, the rate was 4,089 per 100,000 people. Downtown Atlanta's rate in 2005 was more than 4,500 incidents.
