Corktown, East Side sites receive brownfield tax credits

Corktown and the East Side will soon say goodbye to one of their Brownfields thanks to an approval by the Detroit Brownfield Authority. Both sites will include green/energy-conservation features for which they will receive Michigan Business Tax credits.

Corktown's $4 million project will feature 18 town homes, built north of Tiger Stadium. The project is part of Corktown's repopulation effort.

The east side plan is looking at two commercial buildings built northeast of Conner and Charlevoix streets.

O’Donoghue also said Corktown Housing will sell the units to families, requiring at least one child under 18 to be living in each. A cleanup of arsenic, chromium, mercury, selenium and silver is required at the site, for which the $482,400 state tax break is sought. O’Donoghue also said developers will seek a Neighborhood Empowerment Zone designation to give local tax abatements for homeowners.

On Detroit’s east side, a $6.3 million project of the Northeast Guidance Center won authority board approval for a $688,250 cleanup tax credit.
