State's 'Big Three' universities say more funding will drive economy

The state's three largest research universities — Wayne State University, Michigan State University and the University of Michigan — told the House Appropriations Subcommittee they need funding increases to shore up their role as an economic driver.

“The importance of Michigan’s research universities cannot be denied,” WSU President Irvin Reid said.

The research conducted by the three universities remains the state’s primary means of producing new talent and of bringing back a stronger quality of life, he said.
