Washington city leader says Business Improvement District could help Detroit

According to the story:

Detroit is looking to Washington for inspiration in creating a Business Improvement District in the city, in which downtown businesses would be taxed to raise money for street cleaning, landscaping and other downtown improvements.

Rich Bradley, CEO of the Washington Downtown Partnership, told executives at the Downtown Detroit Partnership’s meeting that Washington’s Business Improvement District, created in 1998, has brought retail and residential development.

Downtown Washington uses captured taxes to pay for security, longer bus hours and clean up. He says Detroit is prime for similar improvements because it has added “many more places of quality,” including businesses and residential developments, since he last visited more than 10 years ago.

No formal plans have been made to attempt a BID in Detroit, but it is on the DDP’s radar.
