In the northwest side of Detroit the Artist Village is getting close to its vision... except for one thing: A cafe.

But creators of the northwestern Detroit artist strip, next to the
historic Redford Theatre, say one thing is missing: a neighborhood café
for suburban and urban crowds to merge and build friendships over a cup
of coffee.
A 1,000-square-foot building is gutted. Permits have
been pulled and companies are volunteering time to get it done. But
funding and materials are lacking for the Motor City Java House -- the
proposed meeting spot expected to serve as the centerpiece for
village-goers.
Project organizers are turning to the public in
hopes of fulfilling its necessity wish list and raising the $50,000
needed to get the shop off the ground.
"If you have a house
without a kitchen, you don't really have a home. Motor City Java House
is the kitchen of the Artist Village Detroit," said John George,
founder and director of Motor City Blight Busters, the neighborhood
rehabilitation group behind the project.
