The best expression of out-of-town love for the D we heard this week comes from the mean streets of New York City, where a group of Motor City expats formed
635 Mile. Founder Rachel Jacobs and her band of Detroit natives meet regularly to raise money for local nonprofits and figure out ways to help their hometown from afar. 635
Mile grew out of her frustration – and that of her friends. These were
people who grew up here, graduated from colleges here and left here

where they are now, not Detroit. But they knew people who stayed here,
they have family here and they feel truly connected to what happens.
