The exercise of reviewing and selecting projects was the perfect tonic for the seemingly relentless, negative economic news battering Southeast Michigan and the domestic auto industry.

We found that in the first five years of the new millennium, metro Detroit invested nearly $14 billion in new significant new projects. The actual total is far more, but our reporters and editors zeroed in on the most significant for this list.
