WHAT’S HAPPENING: The Greektown Neighborhood Partnership has issued a construction progress update on the Monroe Streetscape Transformation Project.

The Partnership says a series of changes made will help increase accessibility to the district, including:

  • New concrete sidewalks, widened paths, and clearer routes help keep the district walkable and safe.
  • New fencing and barriers will improve visibility along Monroe Street.

Greektown Neighborhood Partnership says it welcomes visitors to see the progress made to enhance walkability, boost local businesses and celebrate the district’s future while honoring its history and heritage.

This project, which will be completed in 2026, “will help Greektown remain a premier Detroit destination for another 100 years, according to the Partnership. Additional winter season work will continue as weather permits,” the Partnership says.

PROJECT DETAILS: Branded as “A New Greektown: Honoring History, Embracing the Future,” the four-block stretch will feature wider sidewalks, greenery, flexible curb-less lanes, and infrastructure designed to support both daily foot traffic and large-scale events. The redesign aims to “enhance public safety, boost event programming, and celebrate the district’s rich cultural and historic identity.

Work on Monroe and St. Antoine Streets when the first blocks of granite street pavers were laid in August.

Key improvements include expanded pedestrian zones, human-scale landscaping, enhanced lighting for visibility and safety measures, and signature signage for the district.

Other upgrades, such as premium paving, expanded dining patios, flexible programming spaces, festivals, and markets, as well as integrated art and heritage installations that celebrate the unique history and legacy of Greektown, all combine to create a vibrant community space.

MORE DETAILS: The plan also incorporates multimodal transit access and designated pick-up and drop-off zones, ensuring accessibility and aesthetic appeal while minimizing barriers between sidewalks and streets.

Pedestrian access on Monroe Street remains open for visitors to continue to shop, dine, and explore.

Greektown has more than 6,000 parking spaces available within two blocks of the neighborhood. Visitors can continue to enjoy the district’s restaurants, businesses, and City events with increased ease.

Free parking is available in the Hollywood Casino Greektown parking garage during non-event days. Greektown also has a number of surface parking lots available, which can be accessed from Gratiot.
