On Juneteenth this year, music collective D.Cipher will kick off a 12-week Black Bottom Live Music Series.
"I love Detroit but they need to get it together," says Voices of Youth participant Makayla Grice. "It’s amazing how downtown or dominantly white communities look so nice compared to the Black communities."
The Detroit Equity Action Lab will host a free National Day of Healing from Racism event on Tuesday at Wayne State University. The day-long event is focused on learning how to talk about racism’s impact and how to use practices to guide people on their journey of healing from racism.
Amy Kuras spoke with Mark Erwin of Ruth Ellis Center about the recent opening of Detroit's first housing center dedicated to LGBTQ youth. The Clairmount Center also has wraparound services, including health care and employment support, co-located on the premises, to remove common barriers to access for this population.
"It's not enough to treat someone for a disease or help a mother grieve a lost infant," says Phyllis Meadows, a senior fellow at The Kresge Foundation's Detroit Program. "We need to look at all the economical, social, and relational stressors that contributed."
Meet the innovative students who are helping to shape the future of accessible design. “I think products are about people,” says Taylor Spencer, who designed an accessible cookware set. “[...] if it doesn't make a person feel like a person, because they can't use it, then what did you make it for?”
"Our main goal as an organization is to get our members employed," says Sean Kivel, director of Port Huron's Blue Water Clubhouse. "This is a right everyone should be afforded, yet 90% of people with serious mental illness are under-employed or unemployed. Our organization will continue to offer the services needed to change that reality."
"We're seeing organizations dig into the true meanings behind their mission, vision and value statements," says Judy Nimer Muhn, organizational development consultant at Nonprofit Enterprise at Work. "They’re asking how they can uplift those in ways that are deeper, more thoughtful and more evidence-based."
