Celebration is in order for
Spaulding Court, a 20 unit Townhouse in Detroit, which turns 100 years old this year.
A down-home street festival is Saturday June 16. The party is free and open to the public, and there will be a cash bar.
Built in 1912, Spaulding Court was a lively community for those living in the North Corktown neighborhood along Rosa Parks Boulevard. By 2009 though, the building had become a serious hazard to the public and was seized by Wayne County. Nearby residents then formed
Friends of Spaulding Court, a community based nonprofit on a mission to promote the strength and diversity of the Corktown community.
The organization stepped in to revive the property, stabilizing the neighborhood and developing high impact redevelopment models. They also hosted nearly 50
Soup at Spaulding events that raised cash for rehab at Spaulding Court and other local projects.
