Caribbean rhythm & sound: Award-winning Michel Camilo Big Band fires up the Max

Virtuoso pianist, composer and Fred A. and Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Director Chair of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) Michel Camilo returns to Orchestra Hall this Friday for a performance spiced with his trademark Caribbean rhythms, jazz melodies and Latin flare.

Michel Camilo was born in the Dominican Republic. He studied for 13 years at the National Conservatory and at the age of 16 became a member of the National Symphony Orchestra of his country.  He moved to New York in 1979 where he continued his studies at Mannes and The Juilliard School of Music.

His eighteen recordings to date have been recognized with a Grammy award, an Emmy award, two Latin Grammy awards, two Grammy award nominations, several Casandra awards and the Soberano (Dominican Republic) and two Premios de la Música (Spain).

Michel Camilo’s Big Band, Caribe, performs Friday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. at the Max M. Fisher Center, 3711 Woodward Avenue, in Midtown Detroit. For tickets go here.
