Several ongoing exhibits at Midtown Detroit’s Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History Museum might be the ideal introduction to Black History Month 2010.

The following are now up in February and beyond: Crowning Glories: Status, Style, and Self-Expression, Joe Louis: Hometown Hero, Who Am I: My DNA Diary, Life for Me, the Artwork of Robbie Bestthrough, And Still We Rise: Our Journey Through African American History and Culture.

Special programs at the museum this month include: the film Blacks Without Borders (Wednesday, Feb. 17, 6 p.m.; and Clarence B. Jones Reception & Book Signing, also Wednesday, Feb. 17 6 p.m. More programs run through the rest of the month. Go here for details.

Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is at 315 East Warren Avenue, Detroit.

At the University of Detroit Mercy the Friends of Saving Our Heritage presents “Does Black History Matter?” on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 6:45—8:30 p.m.

See the director’s cut of the documentary Forgotten, Emmy-nominated writer-producer Jeff O’Den’s film about black soldiers and sailors making history during the American Civil War. Then join in on an informal and informative discussion about this remarkable period in history.

History is slow to acknowledge contributions made by Black Americans during the Civil War. And, as a result, there are many who truly believe blacks have contributed little to this country. This less than informed attitude diminishes black pride and contributes much toward demoralizing our black youth.

The public is invited to this free event. Go here for more details at exact location at the University of Detroit Mercy (4001 W. McNichols Road, Detroit).
