City, Kresge offer awards for Detroit arts

With all the talk about the creative class and the creative economy, it’s nice to see both artists and nonprofits with arts-related programs get an opportunity for funding. The City of Detroit is awarding mini-grants to organizations for locally developed art projects, and a total of 18 literary and performing artists will be awarded a $25,000 Kresge Artists Fellowship.

The city’s mini-grant applications are available for Wayne County nonprofit organizations and are due Feb. 24. Eligible projects should address local art needs and increase public access to the arts. They can range from traditional expressions of culture to modern and contemporary.

The grants are available through a partnership between the City of Detroit Recreation Department and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. For more information, visit www.detroitmi.gov/artsandgrants or call 313-628-1929 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
 
The Kresge fellowships provide support for 18 artists that live and work in Metro Detroit. Literary artists in the disciplines of art criticism, creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry and playwriting are eligible, as are performing artists in the disciplines of choreography, music composition, performance art, spoken word and sound art. Applications are available online and must be completed by Feb. 26. The 2010 fellows will be announced in June.

Kresge Artist Fellowships are funded by The Kresge Foundation and administered by the College for Creative Studies, with professional development opportunities provided by ArtServe Michigan.
