D-Biz: Showtime’s been clothing the cool on Woodward since 1989; come to its 20th b-day bash

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Can you believe Showtime Clothing is 20 years old? We think it doesn’t even look old enough to get a driver’s license, forreals.

But it’s true, and to celebrate that fact, owner Dan Tartarian is throwing a bash at Hastings Street Ballroom (715 E. Milwaukee) at 8 p.m this Friday, June 19. The party is free, he says, “because of all the support people that have supported us all these years — I want to show my appreciation.”

Showtime is well-known as a clothier of the rock-and-roll lifestyle and, true to form, the performers that evening — including electro rockers Crud and Motown soul stars The Contours — will be dressed by the shop. “All the bands are playing for free,” says Tartarian. “The community is fantastic in Detroit.”

Two decades of business means that Tartarian isn’t a total optimist, however. “When I look back at the ’70s and ’80s, there was a larger community down here, it was more cohesive,” he says. “Through [a rise in the] prices of property, and development, it’s become way more competitive, more corporate.”

Free tickets for the birthday party are available for pick-up at Showtime, located at 5708 Woodward, so if it’s been a while since you’ve checked out the shop, here’s your motivation. Call 313-875-9280 for more information.
