Michigan Avenue spruced up with tree planting
Michigan Avenue got a little greener Saturday, Nov. 5, between Sixth and 11th streets.
Volunteers joined the Greening of Detroit, Greater Corktown Development Corp. and the Michigan Department of Transportation in planting 15 trees along the four-block stretch. This is the second of many plantings planned for the street.
The sidewalks were previously replaced, leaving designated spaces for tree planting. Structural soil will be used to plant the trees to help the root system grow without breaking the sidewalks. Hackberry trees were chosen for the project because of their resistance to drought and tolerance for salt.
“Michigan is our main street,” says Kelli Kavanaugh of the Greater Corktown Development Corp. “The sidewalks and trees are the first step … we need to tackle Michigan step by step.”
She said that MDOT has plans to enhance Michigan Avenue by including parking and bike lanes.
