UM looks to add Detroit semester to curriculum

The University of Michigan is hoping to add a semester to its
curriculum in which students live, study and work in Detroit. The idea
was the brainchild of a recent graduate, Rachel Tanner.

Excerpt:

University officials are looking for a way to implement the program
next year as a way to benefit both the city and school, said Stephen
Ward, assistant professor of Afroamerican and African Studies at UM and
a former faculty advisor to Tanner.

“Housing still hasn’t been
worked out, and there are a number of options to consider,” he said. “But the concept is that the students would live in the city, and take
classes there, and work as well.

“It’s a program that will be of mutual benefit to various entities in the university and within the city.”
