Wayne State uses Biz & Tech Camp to introduce teens to college/work life

This summer 30 high school students from Detroit and Inkster are taking part in Wayne State's E-commerce Summer Camp.

The nine-week experience put on by WSU's School of Business focuses on preparing students for life after school. It teaches about business, technology, college preparation and life skills. Think of it as a paid summer internship complete with mentoring. The top 10 graduates from the program receive free computer systems.

The first week of camp starts off in the classroom, including an orientation to Wayne State, hands-on computer and technical instruction and professional development training. The camp then progresses over the next four weeks so half of each day is spent in the classroom and the other half day spent at the paid internship. The students work full time at their internship location during final four weeks of the program.

Businesses participating include American Axle, Budco, Compuware, the DIA, Ford, VisionIT and Wayne State, among others. The students learn everything from computer application training and web site development to creating and delivering presentations. Wayne State business school students also serve as mentors.
