VisionIT creates 1,500 work opportunities, looks to add 30 new jobs this year

Detroit has always been home to some heavy-hitting business names, ranging from GM to SmithGroup. But naming a big Detroit firm firmly planted in the computer world outside of Compuware is not easily done. VisionIT is trying to change that perception.

The IT firm based out of New Center employs about 1,500 people in nine offices across the country, most of whom work here in Detroit. Although it averages about 100 percent revenue growth per year, its revenues grew 372 percent in 2007 on the strength of $107 million in sales. This year it hopes to grow a modest 40 to 50 percent while adding another 30 jobs, such as IT recruiters and human resource personnel.

"We've been one of the fastest growing companies in the city," says David Segura, CEO of VisionIT.

The company got its start 11 years ago after Segura noticed a dearth of technology firms in the area. It ended up accommodating many of the IT and web needs of several of the city's local firms, such as Casa Hacienda Foods and Ball Park Franks. VistionIT helped build the city's web site and video streamed mayoral speeches before it became en vogue.

"We were a key technology company here in Detroit before the Internet boom," Segura says.

VistionIT plans to continue that. In the last three years, it has landed contracts with many major government agencies and Fortune 500 companies, including Detroit Public Schools. It hopes to continue that winning streak over the next three years and beyond.
