New Detroit market bucks a bad economy

Grocery options are proliferating in the downtown area as yet another supermarket opens in Detroit.

Keith Tansil realized a 37-year-old dream this week when he led a ribbon-cutting celebration for his 10,000-square-foot grocery, Downtown Foodland, in the Shops of Lafayette Park on Saturday. He started as a clerk at Kroger, rose to management positions and attracted cash from blue-chip sources to stock the shelves with everything from canned greens to fresh salmon.

"Thanks to everyone who supported me. Basically I'd like everyone to shop here," said Tansil, 53, as he beamed to the crowds, including Larry and Doreen Hunter, who went to Northwestern High School with him.
