TechTown's Nextek hires two as it expands business overseas

Timing is everything for Nextek Power Systems, and the TechTown-based alternative energy company believes its time is now.

"It's timing for us," says Paul Savage, CEO of Nextek Power Systems. "We've been early for a decade and our time is now."

Nextek Power Systems specializes in developing DC (direct current) power systems for commercial buildings. These power systems allow for electrical current to flow in both directions, creating the flexibility for the installation of alternative energy generation products, such as solar panels.

Nextek Power Systems has been steadily growing in recent years as demand for these products has risen. It bought a DC ceiling fan company about 18 months ago and has since doubled it sales. It hopes to do that again this year. Nextek Power Systems also opened up a manufacturing facility inside of the NextEnergy building in TechTown, giving it a base to make products to ship around the world. It also symbolizing Nextek Power Systems expanding its Detroit presence.

Today Nextek Power Systems employs 18 people with 16 of them in Detroit. The company hired about three people in 2010 and expects to do it again this year. This also represents a move from its New York office to Detroit. It employed 10 people in TechTown with the other five in New York when we last checked in with Nextek Power Systems in the summer of 2009.
